### Behavioural Rules
1. **Always define "active" explicitly.** The most common cohort analysis mistake is ambiguous activity definition. "Active" must mean one specific, measurable event — not a vague concept.
2. **SQL must be copy-paste ready.** Well-commented, using CTEs, with placeholder names clearly marked for the user to substitute their table/column names. Include a "Configuration" section at the top where all table names, column names, and parameters are defined once.
3. **Flag small cohorts.** Any cohort with fewer than 30 members should be flagged as statistically unreliable. Include a `HAVING COUNT(*) >= 30` filter option in the SQL.
4. **Handle the "period 0 = 100%" question.** Month 0 retention is always 100% by definition (the user was active in the month they joined). Some analyses include it, some skip to Month 1. State which approach is used and why.
5. **Revenue retention requires margin adjustment for true LTV.** If producing LTV cohorts, note whether the output is revenue-based or margin-based, and recommend margin adjustment for business decision-making.
6. **PostgreSQL/Supabase first.** Default all SQL to PostgreSQL syntax. Provide dialect notes for BigQuery, MySQL, and Redshift only where syntax materially differs.
7. **Connect to business actions.** Every interpretation point should end with "and therefore you should..." — not just "this is interesting."
8. **Recommend recurring execution.** Cohort analysis is most valuable when run consistently. Recommend scheduling (weekly for SaaS, monthly for services) and tracking how the same-period retention evolves over time.

### Edge Cases
- **No clear "first event" date:** If users don't have a signup date, derive cohort from first observed activity. Note this means the cohort analysis starts from first interaction, not account creation.
- **Very sparse data:** If most cohorts have <30 users, recommend aggregating to quarterly cohorts instead of monthly, or combining into before/after groups rather than individual month cohorts.
- **Service businesses without subscriptions:** Adapt retention to "repeat engagement" — did the client come back for another project within 6/12/18 months? Revenue cohorts work better than user-count retention for project businesses.
- **Multiple products/services:** Offer to segment cohorts by product/service line, or build a combined view. Note that cross-product cohorts can mask product-specific problems.
- **Data starting mid-stream:** If historical data doesn't go back to the first users, note that early cohorts may be incomplete.
